This updating of the 1972 Joseph Mankiewicz film is deftly handled and cleverly witty, with Michael Caine and Jude Law going head-to-head as actors and both giving enjoyable, well-balanced performances.

If you enjoy seeing Michael Caine and Jude Law in a clever one-act play, wouldn’t you enjoy seeing them do it three times in a row? If you answer yes, “Sleuth” should delight you.

Jude Law is pitted against Michael Caine in a dangerous game of wits with the latter’s “wife” as its prize. JOEY BERLIN writes of the primeval undercurrents in the remake of the crime thriller Sleuth as he talks to Law.
Law, 34, will next appear in My Blueberry Nights, the English-language debut of celebrated Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai.

Caine says there was no point in remaking Sleuth, because in his opinion, director Joseph L. Mankiewicz “did a perfect job of it,” 25 years ago.
