It may not be a universal desire, but many people aspire to live the celebrity lifestyle, at least as much as their discretionary budgets will allow. “We” can go to the same clubs and restaurants as “they” do. We can snare many of the same clothes off the racks at the big-name department stores. We can wear the same Oakley shades - but really, when does anyone really spot a celebrity? It’s not like you run into them at the laundromat.

View Through a Filter

Basically, we view our stars through a filter of Hollywood’s making. With the rare exception known as Britney Spears, we rarely see celebrities out of their element, when they’re putting their best face forward. Interviews are scripted and edited, in print or in any other media. Photographs are micro-sculpted with the almighty airbrush. And the jewels shown off by the glitterati on the Red Carpet are often on loan from the designers - such as Michael Katz of Beverly Hills.

Return to Camelot?

So what kind of jewelry do celebs wear when they’re not under the careful focus of their managers, agents and handlers? And where can (again) “we” get some of it for ourselves? Lately, the stars and starlets have not been sporting the diamond-encrusted fare of the boom years. They are seen in public wearing rather understated pieces, such as necklaces featuring a single stone, or simple broaches that hearken back to the days of Camelot (Kennedy’s, not Arthur’s). Earrings and rings, too, have gone the small-yet-elegant route.

This may be (at least in part) a response to our recent economic woes, as the Haves become somewhat more conscience about the plight of the Have-Nots. Or it could just be the pendulum of fashion swinging in that direction. Either way, the departure from chunky show-off jewelry is good news for the adoring public, who can now better afford the jewelry that will help them emulate the celebrities they so admire.
